Top nutrients for better heart health
There are certain nutrients that are particularly important for managing blood pressure. Learn what they are and in which foods to find them:
Magnesium
One of the most important minerals for a healthy heart yet the majority of adults are magnesium deficient. Adults who get less than the recommended amount of magnesium are more likely to have elevated inflammation markers. Inflammation, in turn, has been associated with major health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. Also, low magnesium appears to be a risk factor for osteoporosis. You can find it in greens like spinach, nuts, dry beans and whole grain.
Calcium
Not only for strong bones but this essential mineral can be helpful for managing hypertension as well. As an added benefit, calcium is crucial for the release of hormones and enzymes we need for most body functions to perform smoothly. We consume calcium naturally in dairy products like milk and yoghurt, cheese, lentils, fatty fish like salmon, sardines and dark, leafy greens.
Potassium
Most people who eat a healthy diet should get enough potassium naturally. Low potassium is associated with a risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, arthritis, cancer, digestive disorders, and infertility. Find it in bananas, avocado, nuts, citrus fruits, leafy green veggies, potatoes and milk.
